Shillong, Sept 3: NEEPCO is facing financial loss for shifting office in Delhi and using a rented building in Guwahati.
According to documents available, the NEEPCO office has to pay compensation of around 2.5 core to Powertech Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. for vacating the rented office from Sultanpur in Delhi despite having its own building.
It was in the last part of 2024 that the Delhi office was shifted to its original location from Sultanpur.
Moreover, during Covid-19, pandemic, many departments of NEEPCO (Technical/Finance) were shifted to Guwahati from the headquarters in Shillong
NEEPCO spent crores of rupees as rent at the Guwahati office to accommodate employees shifted from Shillong.
An office order issued on June 26, 2025 referred to the decision of the 296th board meeting of NEEPCO held on May 16, 2025 in New Delhi to shift all offices from Guwahati to Shillong
Following the non-compliance of the directive, the Union Ministry of Power, issued an order on June 11, 2026 restructuring the Board of NEEPCO.
According to the order, NEEPCO will not have any director.
Currently, Baidyanath Maharana, Director (Finance), will complete his 5-year term in September 2026 following which the post will be abolished.
Kundan Bharati Sharma, Deputy. Secretary (Vigilance) Union Ministry of Power issued a letter on June 19 this year to Maharana to hold an inquiry into gross irregularities, and misuse of official power resulting in loss of crores of rupees in renting office accommodation in New Delhi by vacating its own property
NEEPCO has its own two properties in New Delhi- NBCC Tower, Bhikaji Cama Place where the present office is located and another at SCOPE Minar, Laxmi Nagar.
The NEEPCO office at the NBCC Tower, Bhikaji Cama Place, was shifted to Sultanpur in 2023 by paying a rent of Rs. 16, 87, 400 per month to Powertech Infrastructure Pvt Ltd. B-6/7, Safdarjung, New Delhi.
In January 2025, NEEPCO office was shifted to its own property from Sultanpur.
Maharana, being the director of finance, failed to follow the decision of 296th board meeting to bring back to Shillong the departments shifted to Guwahati including the Finance department.
Due to the ongoing inquiry, no vigilance clearance was granted to Maharana to apply for positions outside NEEPCO.
It is yet to be known what will be his status, and whether the terminal benefits will be granted to him by the union ministry of power.
NEEPCO was established on April 2,1976 under NEC, as a wholly owned company celebrating its golden jubilee year in 2026.
On March 27, 2020, NEEPCO was reduced to a subsidiary company of NTPC and the reason to sell the stakes to NTPC is best known to the Ministry of Power.
Around 95% of employees of NEEPCO are from the North East.
Sources said that the failure to achieve the targets may be a reason for the greater role of NTPC.
