Shillong, Sept 12: Keralites in the city celebrated Onam thanks to the initiative of All India Malayali Association Meghalaya chapter and Kalakairali, on Saturday ( Sept 12)
Chief Secretary Shakil P Ahammed, who was the chief guest, asked the gathering to be optimistic in life.
“Believe in yourself and never give up.” he said at the ‘Shillong Onam 2026’ celebrations held at Soso Tham Auditorium.
He urged the younger generation to draw inspiration from the resilience, enterprise and spirit of exploration that have long defined Malayalis.
Speaking at the All India Malayali Association Meghalaya chapter gathering in association with Kalakairali, Shillong, Shakil said Malayalis have an innate ability to venture beyond familiar surroundings, explore opportunities across the world and adapt to different societies. He emphasised that this journey should always be accompanied by a commitment to becoming responsible and contributing citizens. Sharing lessons from his own journey, he urged children to have confidence in themselves, face challenges with determination and never give up on their dreams.
The celebrations brought together members of the Malayalee community and friends of Kerala in Shillong, reflecting the spirit of Onam as a festival of harmony, inclusiveness and togetherness. The programme featured traditional cultural performances, music and dance, followed by the traditional Onam Sadya.
A major highlight was the presentation of the ‘Kalakairali Kesari Award 2026’ to CO Koshy, in recognition of his distinguished contribution to education, institution building and the community. With over 12 years at Patkai College near Dimapur and nearly 16 years as Principal of Army Public School, Shillong, Koshy has remained a mentor and guide to generations and a respected presence in the Malayalee community.
Actress Biana Momin was also honoured with a special appreciation for her acclaimed portrayal of Mlathi Chetathi in the Malayalam film Eko. Her recognition highlighted the growing cultural bond between Meghalaya and Kerala and the community’s appreciation of talent that transcends linguistic and cultural boundaries.
The celebrations concluded with the traditional Sadya, bringing the community together in the spirit of Onam — celebrating heritage, friendship, achievement and the bonds that unite people wherever they may live.
