Shillong, Sept 21: The Khasi Students’ Union ( KSU) has issued a legal notice ro two police officers here for implicating the union for the September 18 hit-and-run case at Urkaliar.
Notices were sent to Superintendent of Police (City) Dangsan Khyriem and Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Hari Prasanth MR for their statements following the incident near Samkhamti Petrol Pump.
On September 18 evening, police were conducting checking when two persons on a scooty tried to evade the checkpoint and hit Additional SP, East Khasi Hills (Traffic) Lovish Garg injuring him on duty. Police arrested the duo, seized the vehicle and produced them in court.
After the incident, media reports quoted police officers linking the arrested persons to the union.
The notice through its advocate, said there is no legally admissible evidence to prove that the two individuals are its members.
“The Union has sought a clarification on what basis the two persons were linked to the KSU before the public through the media without verification,” said the KSU Information & Publicity Secretary Pynshai Kupar M Dkhar in a statement.
According to the KSU, the notice does not seek to interfere with the probe.
“We respect the investigation and the court proceedings. But criminal liability must rest on evidence and due process, not on suspicion. Linking the union to a criminal act without proof is unacceptable and defamatory,” Dkhar added.
The KSU asserted that such unverified claims have damaged the reputation and public credibility of the union.
The legal notice of the union demanded a public written clarification and apology in the media, and an immediate stop to issuing any false or defamatory statements against the KSU.
The KSU has set a 15-day deadline for compliance, failing which it has threatened to initiate criminal defamation and other legal proceedings.
“If no corrective action is taken within 15 days, the union will be forced to take stronger legal steps as per law,” Dkhar said.
