Shillong, Sept 27: Four workers from Assam died of suffocation inside a septic tank in South Garo Hills on Sunday ( Sept 27) morning .
The case is similar to the death of five persons due to suffocation in a dug-out well in Lapalang here in July this year.
Police said that information was received that on September 27 around 3.pm, four labourers who were engaged in construction work at the house of Sebastian Ch. Sangma of Rangdokram village were reportedly trapped inside a newly constructed septic tank.
Police said it was reported that the new septic tank had been constructed near the house and that the labourers attempted to open its cover.
“While attempting to open the cover, they reportedly fell inside the septic tank. During the process of rescuing their co-workers, the rescuers were also affected by the gas present inside the septic tank”, the police said.
The incident is suspected to have occurred due to the presence of poisonous/toxic gas inside the septic tank. The exact cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained, police added:
