Accident led to electrocution of three minors: Power Minister

Shillong, July 16: The MeECL has found falling of a tree branch on electric wire (in picture) as the reason for electrocution of three minors in Ri Bhoi.
“This has happened because of falling of the tree branch on the wire and snapping of wire. It’s unfortunate”, a power department official said on Thursday.
Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh termed the electrocution as an accident and said the government will consider compensation once the official report is submitted.
Lyngdoh said the department had inspected the site and sought a detailed report from the Commissioner and Secretary.
“Some branches fell on the 11 KV line. Unfortunately, those three children happened to pass by that stretch,” he said.
Regarding compensation, he said, “Yes, as per the policy there is. We will look into the matter and let the proper report come.”
The minister acknowledged long-pending infrastructure problems in Ri Bhoi, particularly old and unsafe wiring.
“This is everywhere. In fact, Ri Bhoi is one area where we have this problem. The structure is very old and we have to revamp it. We are doing something for that also,” Lyngdoh said.
Metbah said Dorbar Shnong had also submitted a letter terming it an accident, and asserted that the department never intended for such tragedies to occur.
