Affected parties should complain about extortion: Police

HNYM files FIR, says name misused by miscreants

Shillong, April 18: In the absence of complaints, the police are finding it difficult to widen the probe into extortion notes served on businessmen by some groups.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range),Davis R. Marak said the police wanted the affected businessmen to lodge complaints.

“We are investigating the matter seriously, but unless the affected parties come forward with proper complaints, we cannot move legally. Without willing witnesses or legal sanction, such cases will fall flat in court,” Marak said.

Several money receipts belonging to some groups surfaced on social media prompting action by the police.

However, on April 16, Marshal Nonglait, Vice President and Kromeior Rangjem, General Secretary, HNYM jointly lodged a complaint that unknown miscreants defamed their organisation by illegally collecting money in the name of HNYM from Ïewduh, Shillong. The complainants said the receipts do not belong to the organisation.
