Agatha Sangma: A surprise choice as child rights panel chief

Shillong, Sept 7: The cabinet decision on the appointment of NPP leader and former Tura MP Agatha Sangma is yet to be officially announced by the state government.

Unlike the past, the Chief Minister’s Office( CMO) did not inform the media about the cabinet meeting scheduled for September 6.

The cabinet meeting was held in the morning. However, there was no media briefing.

When asked, a CMO functionary had said Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh would brief the press about the decisions.

Lyngdoh conveyed on the WhatsApp groupbon Friday that he will brief the press on Monday (September 9).

Sources questioned why this time the media was kept at bay hinting that since the decision was on Agatha, the chief minister wanted to avoid controversial questions as it is a political appointment.

Curiously, the social media handles of the chief minister did not have anything on the cabinet decisions especially the appointment of Agatha.

Former MLA and brother of Agatha, James Sangma, who is the chairman of Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation,  expressed happiness over the appointment of Agatha.

“I extend my warmest congratulations to my dear sister, Smt. Agatha K. Sangma, on her appointment as the Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights”, James wrote on X on Saturday.

An official source claimed that due process was followed in the appointment as it was recommended by a select committee.
