Agreement reached to start cultivation in Lapangap

Forum seeks inclusion of Khasi- Pnar villages of Block-1 in Meghalaya

Shillong, June 2: Meghalaya and Assam reached an amicable solution on Tuesday ( June 2) as far as cultivation of land in Lapangap is concerned.

“Following detailed deliberations, it was agreed that the villagers of Lapangap shall continue paddy cultivation in the foothills of the area of difference, while the villagers of Tahpat will continue plantation of seasonal crops such as banana, pineapple, ginger and others on the hilltops and slopes. It was further
decided that the matter relating to permanent boundary demarcation in the area of difference will be considered and decided by the appropriate committee at the state level.

Both sides will maintain peace, harmony and tranquility and will refrain from
any activity that may create disturbance or affect the prevailing law and order.

The  high-level meeting involving political representatives, senior civil and police officials, and representatives of the concerned local bodies from the Government of Meghalaya and Assam was held  at the Assam police camp to deliberate on issues relating to the Lapangap area of difference.

Representing Assam were Dr. Tuliram Ronghang, MLA and Chief Executive Member, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Amarsing Tisso, Member of Parliament, Ajay Kumar Tiwari,  Additional Chief Secretary (Home & Political),  Surjya Rongphar, MLA and Executive Member(KAAC), Lunsing Teron, MLA and Executive Member, (KAAC),  Habbey Teron, MLA, Niso Terangpi, MLA, Avijit Kro, Deputy Speaker (KAAC), Headsing Rongphar, Member of Autonomous Council (KAAC), Preeti Kumari,Deputy Commissioner, West Karbi Anglong, and Dinesh Kumar,  Superintendent of Police, West Karbi Anglong.

Meghalaya was represented by Sniawbhalang Dhar, Deputy Chief Minister, Frederick R. Kharkongor,  Principal Secretary, Cyril V. Diengdoh, Commissioner & Secretary, Garod L.S.N. Dykes, Secretary, Thombor Shiwat, Chief Executive Member, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), Abhinav Singh, Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District and Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills.

Earlier in the day, Hynñiewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum has petitioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for recognition and Inclusion of Khasi Pnar Villages of Block – 1 within Meghalaya.

“The Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council has reunified and officially notified the Elaka Labang Nangphyllut on  November 8, 2023 through notification NO. JHADC/POL/23/2021/19, appointing Shri Prolin Samayang as Acting Dolloi and issuing him the Sanad (Certificate). Furthermore, Sanads have been issued for the Waheh Chnong (Headman) and the notification of the Villages as documented. It is of utmost importance that the Meghalaya government recognizes and incorporates these villages into the State of Meghalaya, ensuring that the residents of these areas receive their opportunities in all respects and necessities”, the Forum said.
