AHAM writes to CM against village council, unrepresented tribes

Shillong, Sept 24: The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has petitioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma  against the dilution of Nokmaship institution and inclusion of unrepresented tribes in the proposed amendment of sixth schedule with special reference to GHADC.

In the letter addressed to the chief minister, AHAM vice president George Prince Ch. Momin said the organisation has no issues towards the development activities and the policies towards the direct funding of the Centre to GHADC, however, diluting the power and functions of the traditional institutions such as Nokmaship remains its deepest concern.

In empowering the GHADC, the proposed amendment has forgotten to empower the traditional institutions such as Nokmaship under the proposed amendment of Village Council.

Though the organisation is voicing dissent along with all   NGOs and the Council of Nokmas against the proposed inclusion of village council, it also extended support to NGOs of Garo Hills against the inclusion of unrepresented tribes in GHADC.

AHAM has asked the chief minister to do corrective measure as the failure of which, may result in democratic means of agitation in days to come.
