Amra Bangali threatens stir if Centre fails to protect non-tribals
Shillong, Jan 28: The Assam unit of Amra Bangali, a Kolkata-based social organisation, has condemned the attack on non-tribals in the hill city on January 20 and threatened to protest if the Centre failed to ensure safety of the minority communities in Meghalaya.
In a statement, the organisation said while on Republic Day, the leaders of the country were talking about harmony and unity, they were barely doing anything to save the Bengali community in Meghalaya.
“We demand intervention of the President and the Union Home Minister in ensuring punishment of the perpetrators of the January 20 incident and ending atrocities against non-tribals in the state. If the atrocities continue, we will resort to protests,” said Sadhan Purkayasthya, secretary of the organisation’s Assam unit.
Peace in Manipur
Amra Bangali, which has moved the Supreme Court against inner line permit in Manipur, also said that its move “is not intended to create communal disharmony in Manipur”.
“There has been a misunderstanding over the case. We will appeal to the court to ensure that communal harmony is maintained in Manipur. We want peace,” said Purkayasthya.
