Shillong, Feb 2: Former UDP member Banalari Khongwar joined the National People’s Party (NPP) on Thursday.
Khongwar and her supporters were welcomed by the NPP national vice president and deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong in the presence of party leaders here.
Tynsong informed at the meeting that Khongwar will be appointed as the NPP state vice president of the women’s wing.
According to him, she has the capacity to help not only in Pynursla but in other constituencies.
“We are getting good response from the people,” Tynsong said.
Khongwar had unsuccessfully contested against Tynsong in 2008 and 2013 on a UDP ticket and left the party last year.
“When (L) Dr Donkupar Roy was there, we used to have good understanding among party workers but when he is no more and new leaders came, I decided to leave the party last year. I did not plan to join the NPP so I continued with my own business,” she said.
“After having seen that Tynsong had done so much for the constituency, me and my supporters have decided to support him in the coming election,” she said.
Mukul to join BJP after polls: Tynsong
Speaking to reporters, Tynsong alleged that the Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Mukul Sangma and his team are planning to desert the AITC and join the BJP after the elections.
He said there is already an arrangement made between Mukul and the BJP.
He was reacting to the statement of Mukul that NPP is B-team of the BJP.
“I know his plan. If he wins 3-5 seats he will join the BJP. It is true that there is some kind of arrangement made, in what way I don’t know but Mukul will come out of the TM,” he said.
He reminded that the chief minister Conrad K Sangma had also hinted this in one of the public meetings in Garo Hills.
Asking the people not to trust Mukul’s leadership, Tynsong said, “Anytime he can jump anywhere as he knows very well that he will not get many seats”
