Shillong, Aug 10: The bar associations of Meghalaya have removed the membership of Advocate General Amit Kumar on Monday (August 10).
This follows the controversy surrounding the alleged molestation of a law intern by a senior advocate and the subsequent action of parading him by the HNYF members.
The stand of the Shillong Bar Association and the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association is that Kumar blamed the legal fraternity for failing to protect the law interns and the women lawyers, which, according to them, is defamatory.
In a statement issued here, the secretary general of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association said it was also decided to write to the Chief Minister to remove Kumar from the post of advocate general.

“The Bar Council of Meghalaya is in receipt of a complaint lodged by a law intern alleging sexual harassment by an Advocate and necessary action in accordance with law will be taken against the said Advocate. As portrayed by some sections of the media, it is clarified that the members of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association are not divided on the issue of the allegations levelled against the said Advocate. Both the Associations condemn his actions, the Shillong Bar Association has even suspended his membership. Both the Bar Associations had approached the Hon’ble Chief Justice of the Hon’ble High Court of Meghalaya against the actions of non-state actors in engaging in mob violence and parading a citizen while the state machinery remained silent spectators in utter violation of directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. The Hon’ble High Court was pleased to register a sou moto writ petition at the joint request of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association. However, during the course of hearing of the said writ petition, Shri Amit Kumar, Advocate General of Meghalaya made certain defamatory and disparaging statements in open Court to vilify the image of the Bar Association and its members. Shri Amit Kumar continued his vilification campaign by addressing the Bar through a highly offensive open letter, blatantly demeaning the high Office of the Advocate General.
Thereafter, the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association together with the Shillong Bar Association have jointly taken a resolution at its extraordinary General Meeting held on 05.08.2026 strongly condemning the action of Shri Amit Kumar, Advocate General in casting aspersions on the Bar and making false statements in Court, the name of Shri Amit Kumar was removed from the roll of advocates of the Bar Association and also that the members of both the Bar Associations do not recognise him as the Advocate General for the state of Meghalaya. It was further resolved that a formal letter be addressed to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya demanding the formal removal of Shri Amit Kumar from the position of Advocate General within one week of the receipt of such letter. During the course of the meeting, the Members deliberated upon the manner in which the Government of Meghalaya has been indiscriminately appointing lawyers who are not residents of Meghalaya to represent it before various Courts in Meghalaya as well as the rest of the country by completely ignoring the interest of the community of lawyers in Meghalaya. It has been reliably learnt that Mr. Amit Kumar, the Advocate General of Meghalaya has made certain questionable appointments of his family members and close acquaintances as counsels for the State of Meghalaya before the Supreme Court of India, the High Court of Meghalaya, other High Courts and tribunals across the country, thereby unjustly enriching his personal wealth and detrimentally depleting the resources of the State of Meghalaya. The High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association has filed an RTI application with the relevant Departments of the State of Meghalaya requesting information relating to the appointments, fee structures, etc. of the Advocate General, his family members and close acquaintances and upon receiving the requested information the Bar shall take consequent action in the matter”.
