Shillong, Sept 20: BBS College emerged winner of the 27th All Shillong Dr. MM Das Memorial Inter-College/Higher Secondary School debate competition organised by the Zenith Jubelieth Club at Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School here on Saturday.
The theme was ‘social media does more harm than good for a healthy democracy’.
BK Bajoria School and St Edmund’s College secured first and second runner-up positions, respectively.
Naason R Lyngkhoi of BBS College was the winner of the best speaker title and also the most humorous.
Students of 13 educational institutions were vociferous regarding the impact of social media on democracy.
The topic evoked exchanges of innovative ideas by 26 debaters, both for and against the motion, who cited examples from domestic and international politics to drive their points home.
The Zenith Jubelieth Club also celebrated its 56th foundation day on Saturday with talks on its social welfare activities, delivered by community leaders and senior club members, besides th rendition of cultural items by children of the art and dance schools run by it.
