Bindo slams I-T dept for asking tax exemption certificates

Shillong, July 12: Former deputy chief minister Bindo Lanong has asked the income tax department not to harass people by asking    income tax exemption certificates.

“The banks in Shillong are asking the scheduled tribes to produce the income tax exemption certificates. Shop keepers, businessmen and many others are affected, when I asked banks, they said it was insisted by the income department”, Lanong said.

The UDP leader pointed out that the indigenous people are exempted under Income Tax Act 1961, section 10(26).

“If we are exempted, why should the income tax officials ask for exemption certificates?” Lanong said.

In this context, Lanong doubted the identity of income tax officials.

“Should we tell them to bring Indian citizenship certificates,” he said
