BJP Mahila leaders & TMC activists among 18 arrested for Tura violence

Shillong, July 24: As many as 18 miscreants, including BJP women leaders and TMC activists who were allegedly involved in the  violent incident in Tura on Monday were arrested by the West Garo Hills police.

After the miscreants pelted stones, the police personnel used tear gas to disperse the crowd who had gathered outside the chief minister’s office in Tura where a meeting between the leaders of ACHIK and the chief minister was about to finish. The agenda was on reservation roster and winter capital.

West Garo Hills Police chief Vivekanand Singh Rathore said on Monday night that the two BJP mahila morcha leaders from West Garo Hills identified as Dilche Ch. Marak and Belina M Marak were arrested.

TMC activist Salseng R Marak of Balalgre, Garobadha West Garo Hills who was addressing the mob was also arrested along with one more TMC member who was part of the crowd.

The SP asserted that more arrests will follow and the police are committed to ensure law and order in the district.

The West Garo Hills District Magistrate has imposed night curfew from 9 pm to 5 am in Tura town. Sale of liquor was banned for two days (July 25 and 26) while petrol pumps will be allowed to operate on July 26 and 27 from 9 am to 2 pm.

Schools to remain closed on July 25

All educational institutes in Tura Municipal area (Tura town) will remain closed on July 25.  The institutes will resume normal functioning from July 26 in compliance with provisions of orders passed under Section 144 CrPC by the magistrate.

ORDER

Dated Tura, the 24th July, 2023

No. PA/OC/14/2006/258:- WHEREAS, it has been brought to the notice of the undersigned that some pressure groups were organising a protest against the implementation of the roster system and on the demand for winter capital;

AND WHEREAS, in order to settle the matter a meeting between the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Meghalaya with pressure groups was held today the 24th July, 2023 at CM’s Secretariat, Dakopgre, Tura;

AND WHEREAS, in course of meeting some miscreants and anti-social elements created nuisance outside of the meeting venue;

AND WHEREAS, I am satisfied that emergent steps are necessary to be taken to prevent any breach of the peace or public tranquillity or loss of life etc.

NOW, THEREFORE, in the exercise of powers conferred upon me under section 144, C.r.P.C. I, Jagdish Chelani, IAS, District Magistrate, West Garo Hills, Tura do hereby prohibit –

I. Assembly/gathering of 5 or more than 5 (five) persons at a place at any time in the public space or in the govt. offices.

II. There shall be complete curfew from 2100 hrs to 0500 hrs.

III. Causing obstruction or intimidation to the movement of office vehicles or officers.

IV. Moving to the any area with the intention of carrying out any kind of protests.

V. Carrying/concealing on the person of lathis, sticks, stones, missiles, firearms or any kind of lethal weapons, by any person, group of persons or organisation.

VI. Opening of IMFL OFF shops for the next two days i.e. on 25th and 26th July, 2023.

VII. Opening of fuel pumps tomorrow i.e. 25th July. They will remain open only from 0900 hrs to 1400 hrs under scrutiny of security forces for the dates 26th and 27th July. They are to remain closed for the remaining duration for these days i.e. 26th July and 27th July, 2023. No sale of petrol in jerrycans or in loose is allowed.

VIII. Sale of fuel exceeding 10L except for official vehicles of Magistrates and security forces.

Garages and repair shops/workshop shall keep all spare tyres inside the shop/workshop.

This order will not apply to armed force personnel or para-military personnel and other law-enforcing agencies on lawful duty/deployment.

This order will extend to the entire Tura town area.

As the circumstances of the case do not admit service of notice in due time, this order is passed ex parte.

Given under my hand and seal this day the 24th July, 2023 and shall be in force until further orders.
