BJP Mahila Morcha head bats for women candidates

Shillong, Nov 2: BJP’s national Mahila Morcha president Vanathi Srinivasan said on Wednesday the party would give tickets to women candidates if they are eligible.

Srinivasan, who was in the city, said the party is focusing on developing the qualities of women workers in communicating and connecting with people and guiding them to become winnable candidates in the future.

“We should not ask for ticket because we are women. We must develop their qualities in how to win the hearts… they (women workers) have to work hard. I am advising them and guiding them to work for people,” said Srinivasan, who is also a lawyer.

“The state president (Ernest Mawrie) agreed that there should be women candidates. Whoever is doing a good work will be given the opportunity to contest the elections. I hope the state unit will recommend good women candidates,” she added.

Though the party does not have any ticket reservation for women candidates here, but BJP is “the only party in the country that has 33% reservation for women in organisational positions”, she pointed out.

To a query on violence against women and the rising number of single mothers in the state, Srinivasan said BJP is committed to empowering women and protecting them and children. “We are giving women legal as well as moral support to fight for justice.”

She also mentioned that the BJP state unit will include the cause of single mothers in the election manifesto.
