
Shillong, Nov 25: A delegation of state cabinet met the chairperson of the NHRC Justice Arun Kumar Mishra in New Delhi and briefed him about the Mukroh firing incident terming it as inhumane act by the Assam police.
The government also sought the NHRC’s intervention as human rights issues are involved.
The delegation said that the action by Assam police was in complete violation of human rights and that the Centre had already decided to institute a CBI probe into the incident.
“We have asked for support in this entire matter and also requested them to take necessary action from their side as this is a clear case of human rights violation,” the chief minister said after the meeting.
KSU-Assamese body meet
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and the Shillong Socio-Cultural Assamese Students’ Association (SSASA) said the ongoing agitations are not ethnic-oriented or a Khasi-Assamese conflict but are directed towards both the governments of Assam and Meghalaya for their indifference and lethargic approach in resolving the persisting border disputes for the past 50 years resulting in the loss of several lives.
The joint statement was made in view of the current tense situation arising due to the border conflict following the killing of 5 Khasi villagers and 1 Assam forest official by Assam police in Mukroh
MTDF condemns violence
The Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) has appealed to the NGOs to refrain from any activities that would aggravate the situation thus affecting tourism in the state.
In a statement, chairman of rural tourism committee of the MTDF Aiban S Mawkhroh said while condemning the incident at the Assam Meghalaya border wherein six lives from Mukroh Village in West Jaintia Hills were lost in the senseless firing by the Assam Police, the Forum said it stands for the development of tourism in the state.
“We urge them to refrain from taking up any activities that would aggravate the situation thus affecting tourism and other allied activities associated with it,” Mawkhroh said.
He said the Forum which is also working for the promotion of rural tourism felt that the recent untoward incidents in Shillong have seriously affected the partners working in the rural tourism industry like homestay owners, local entrepreneurs at camping sites, local transporters and small businesses at tourism sites.
