Cabinet restricts parking on road

Shillong, Feb 26: Cabinet has approved the Meghalaya Urban Parking Policy 2025. This is being done as part of the comprehensive mobility plan and entails a comprehensive parking policy to check unorganised parking on street in urban areas.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma told reporters after the meeting on Wednesday the absence of a mechanism to take fees for vehicles that are parked on the road poses great challenge with growing urbanisation and traffic concerns also voiced by local dorbar and localities.
He said the government will work with the community for proper implementation of the parking reforms to make urban areas more organised.
Doctors exempted from mandatory service
The cabinet decided to amend the mandatory medical service policy for medical students for UG and PG, pursuing academic curriculum under the state government sponsorship/state quota.
Briefing reporters , Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said through the policy, doctors working for non-profit organizations and central institutions in the state will be exempted from mandatory service in government hospitals.
Police Act & DGP
The cabinet approved the amendment to the Meghalaya Police Act which concerns the appointment of the DGP of the state in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Court that the tenure of the police chief should be two years.
Birth & death registration
The cabinet also approved the Meghalaya Registration of Birth and Death Amendment Rules. This is being done in line with the provisions from the central government and will streamline the process of registration to eliminate inconsistencies in name, dates and addresses.
