Call for decriminalisation of drug users

Shillong, Dec 2: President of Meghalaya Drug Users’ Forum Barry Lesly Kharmalki on Monday stressed the need of decriminalising  drug users.

Addressing a gathering at Shanti Bhavan, Missionary Sisters of Charity, Barry said the physical and psychological needs of the drug users should be addressed.

He also expressed concern over many not getting treatment for hepatitis.

Isaac Surong, executive board member of the forum and Shem Marbaniang of KJP shared their experience on the occasion.

The DREAM Mission director Francis Kharshiing said that the goverment is committed to address the concerns of the drug users forum .

Kharshiing said everyday, many individuals, including those struggling with substance abuse, gather for a free lunch at the Shanti Bhavan.

He said as part of their mission to show empathy and extend meaningful support, the meeting was called.

“In addition to counseling, we aim to provide these individuals with access to various vocational opportunities. To this end, we are inviting professionals managing vocational training centers to educate the users about the skills and training programs available and help them to rebuild their lives and achieve self-reliance”, he said.
