Guwahati, Dec 23 (UNI): The Cattle Preservation (Amendment) Bill was passed in Assam Assembly on Thursday which aims to regulate the slaughter, consumption and transportation of cattle in the state.
Notably, the BJP-led Assam government moved an amendment to the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, on the first day of the winter session, which was passed just four months back. The amendment bill includes a clause which does not prohibit the transport of cattle throughout the state, but only to “any other place in a district within the state which shares international border with any foreign country”.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while speaking on the issue said, “We are looking to put an end to cow slaughter in the state.”
He added that there will be no restriction on cattle rearing for farming purposes. “We are trying to stop the smuggling of cattle to the districts alongside the Bangladesh border,” the CM added.
Sarma said that from now those involved in illegal cattle trade and supply will invite punishments.
The police will be free to seize the vehicles and auction them off. The Chief Minister stated that the state will aim to increase its milk production adding that the government will focus on it from now.
