Central scheme divides Khasi-Garo Hills

Shillong,March 30: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has sought a clarification on the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) in Meghalaya.

PMJVK is aimed at addressing development deficits of the identified minority concentrated areas.

HITO general secretary Wanbun N Dkhar told reporters on Wednesday that according to the reply received through RTI query on October  21, 2021 from the Union Ministry of Minority, the project was implemented only in West Garo Hills being a single district to benefit from the scheme since 2015-2020 whereas the other nook and corner of the state was neglected.

There were 22 projects under PMJVK.

HITO blamed both Mukul Sangma and Conrad Sangma for implementing the scheme only in Garo Hills and added that separate Khasi-Jaintia state is the answer to the neglect by the government.

“We would like to know from the chief minister as to whether the scheme’s guidelines indicate that it is meant for the welfare of schedule caste/schedule tribe, other backward classes and minorities’, he said.

Tribal Research Institute

The HITO also questioned why the government set up Tribal Research Institute with several crores of rupees only in West Garo Hills and not in Khasi Hills.
