Charles raises nun harassment issue in Assembly, CM assures action

Shillong, Feb 22: After a nun serving in Siju, South Garo Hills was harassed in Assam on February 17, the Opposition TMC MLA  Charles Pyngrope raised the issue in the Assembly in the form of a zero hour notice on Thursday.

Following the incident, Auxiliary Bishop of Tura Jose Chirackal had take up the matter with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and the local MLA Rakkam Sangma.

According to the complaint, Sr Rosemary  serving at St. John’s Parish, Siju faced harassment while she was travelling from Dudhnoi to Goalpara on February 17.

The bus conductor and some of the passengers made derogatory remarks on her, her religious habit and her faith and she was forced to get out of the bus after it was stopped in an isolated place.

Though she had already paid the fare upto Dudhnoi, the nun was compelled to take another bus to reach Goalpara.

Raising the matter in the Assembly, Charles sought the intervention of the Chief Minister as according to him harassment of religious persons who wear their religious dress is uncalled for.

In reply, the chief minister said he has taken up the matter with Assam Chief Minister who assured action.
However, Conrad said more details about the incident is required especially the bus number and others.
Rakkam concerned 

The local MLA Rakkam, who is also the cabinet minister,  has taken up the matter with chief mnister to seek the intervention of Assam government and the Centre.

“I am taking up the matter, with HCM and urging to take the matter with Assam Govt and Centre”, Rakkam said in his response.
