Circuit House, MePDCL building should be given heritage tags

Editor,

“Bidhan Bhawan” (Circuit House) at Last Stop Laban, Shillong is now under the ownership of State Government of Meghalaya. The house was built by Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. It was known as “Bidhan Bhawan” by the local people of Shillong. The house (MePDCL) situated opposite Meghalaya Secretariat was built by Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. Now it is under state electricity board. These two old houses of Shillong may be protected by the State Government of Meghalaya as heritage houses. Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy is the person who brought electricity for public in Shillong for the first time in the first part of 1920s.
Bidhan Bhawan at Last Stop Laban is very important and special because Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose stayed in this house in June 1929. Rabindranath Tagore’s birthday was celebrated in this house in May 1923 by Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. Many famous personalities visited this Bidhan Bhawan. It is unfortunate that many old materials of Bidhan Bhawan/Circuit House at Last Stop, Laban have not preserved after renovation. I have visited this precious house before and after renovation. If State Government of Meghalaya will preserve this house in the memory of Bidhan Chandra Roy, that will be a great honour for all of us.
