City to get its first govt animal rescue centre & shelter for strays

Department to hand over responsibility to private entity

Shillong, Apr 29: The city will finally get the long-awaited animal rescue centre and shelter. The state government has set up the centre in Upper Shillong that will be inaugurated in a month, said a senior official in the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary.

The rescue centre has a capacity to accommodate 50 animals. The centre will have a rescue van. “If someone calls up on the helpline number, which we will release soon, the rescue van will reach the place to take the injured animal to the hospital,” the official explained.

The department will hand over the facility as well as the van to a private entity. The official informed that a few city-based animal rescue and care organisations have already approached the government for the same.

The department is also upgrading the veterinary clinic in Garikhana by expanding it and bringing in digital X-ray and ultrasound machines, among other facilities. A full-fledged veterinary hospital will also come up in Upper Shillong.

The department on Saturday celebrated World Veterinary Day with the inauguration of the Indo-Dan Multipurpose Hall in Upper Shillong. Minister AL Hek opened the facility in the presence of Dr Manjunatha C, secretary in the department, and Dr A Laloo, director, among others.
