CM proposes more towers under central scheme

Shillong, Sept 7: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has urged the Centre to set up more mobile towers for better connectivity in remote areas of Meghalaya.

Sangma on Tuesday met Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi and requested him to set up the additional towers under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF).

“The implementation of the project in hilly states like Meghalaya with terrain constraints will require special considerations,” Sangma tweeted.

USOF under the Department of Telecommunications aims to provide widespread and non-discriminatory access to quality information and communications technology services at an affordable price to people in remote and rural areas.

Mobile connectivity in the state’s remote areas is poor so much so that residents of Indo-Bangladesh border villages have to use Bangladesh SIM cards. Mobile internet is equally poor and many students in remote areas are having a harrowing time to keep pace with online classes.
