Concern over other tribes getting land in Meghalaya

Shillong, Sep 21: VPP member Ardent Basaiawmoit brought a resolution on Land Transfer Act and suggested the need to exclude tribes from outside Meghalaya to purchase land in the state.

Bringing the resolution on the violation of the Land Transfer Act, Basaiawmoit said on Thursday that while Khasi-Jaintia and Garos are specified in the list, the tribes from outside the state are purchasing land using Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC).

According to him, the power of attorney is also misused while purchasing land.

However, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma pointed out that there is no violation of land  transfer act but the concerns of the member will be addressed.

“There is no violation of the land transfer act and if there are violations , the member can approach court”, Conrad said.

However, Basaiawmoit refused to withdraw the resolution.
