Construction of road to affect heritage Brookside

Editor,

The construction of a motorable road at  Brookside at Rilbong, Shillong is going on.
As Brookside is a historic place where Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore stayed in October 1919 during his first visit to Shillong, I had requested Director, Urban Affairs department,  Government of Meghalaya during an inspection at Brookside on 23rd May 2024 to declare Brookside as heritage site and not to make motorable road over  Brookside. I told the Director and other officials present during inspection that huge motorable road will destroy Brookside’s ancient beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Narrow walkable road beside Brookside will not disturb heritage Brookside’s peaceful atmosphere.  I have also requested not to cut old trees of Brookside, rather plant more trees at Brookside and make it an oxygen hub.
Already one big old tree has been uprooted for the construction of motorable road at Brookside’s front gate. The beauty of Brookside campus has been hampered due to this.
Yours etc.,
Malabika Bisharad,
Shillong – 4
