Court keen to provide compensation for custodial deaths

Shillong, Aug 1:The High Court of Meghalaya is moving towards providing compensation for the relatives of those who died in custodial deaths since 2012.

During the hearing of the pending PIL on Monday, the court took up the cases of Indian and foreign nationals.

The court wanted all the preparatory steps to be completed within the next two weeks “so that the quantum of compensation and the cases in which the same may be awarded may be ascertained when the matter is taken up three weeks hence”.

The matter will come up for hearing on August 23.
