Crime against children: State BJP demands removal of EKH DC

Shillong, Oct 13: The state BJP has demanded the removal of the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner (DC), citing the district administration’s failure to curb the recent surge in crimes against children.

In a statement issued on Monday, BJP state general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna alleged that there is a lack of effective measures — including inadequate police presence, irregular patrolling and absence of organised night vigil — by the district administration to prevent such crimes.

He emphasised the need for enhanced security measures, such as round-the-clock monitoring of entry and exit points, deployment of Village Defence Parties (VDPs) and police personnel, and involvement of local volunteers to ensure children’s safety.

The BJP leader also criticised the administration for being proactive only during specific events, such as the Cherry Blossom Festival or football tournaments, while neglecting pressing issues like late-night drinking and drug abuse in various parts of Shillong.

“The sequence of crime, especially concerning children, is serious and needs proper scrutiny. The government must rope in experts and seek help from the Home Ministry to ensure that conditions leading to such crimes are weeded out at the grassroots level. It looks like an organised crime happening in the locality,” Pohshna said.
