Cyber wing & crime branch probing threat mails by group
Shillong, April 8: The police have entrusted its cyber wing and the crime branch to probe two threat mails sent by the group ‘Lawei ba Phyrnai’.
The group had sent mails addressed to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to media houses on April 1 and April 7 .
While in the first mail the group had claimed that it represents 37 educated unemployed youths and will resort to bomb blasts of educational institutions from May 1, in the second mail, it wanted the release of former HNLC leader Julius Dorphang, who is in jail after he was convicted for raping a minor girl.
The. deadline to release Dorphang is on April 9, 10 pm.
Police said security of educational institutions has been beefed up following the threatening mails.
When contacted on phone, Special Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang on Friday said investigation was on regarding the matter.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range) Davis NR Marak said on phone, “Cyber wing and crime branch police station are investigating into the matter”.
To a question, the police official said, “We are serious about any threat and we will investigate seriously into this case”.
Answering a question whether the group is the frontal organisation of HNLC, the DIG said, “I cannot say and speculate at this point of time. We will be able to say who is involved in this case once we investigated the case.”
Regarding the security of the educational institutions, Marak said necessary instruction has been passed on to the respective Superintendents of Police (SPs) to take precautionary steps.
“They have been asked to take all necessary precautions and security measures,” he said.
While refusing to divulge further information on the matter, he said, “I cannot give you what we are investigating and how we are investigating but I can only say that we are investigating the matter.”
The letter sent by the publicity secretary without any name had also stated “I’m also emailing you to let you know that I and 36 other well qualified and talented jobless youths have formed an outfit. A terror outfit, of course — with free sponsored arms and ammunition — whose capability and strength will come to display in a couple of weeks from now.”
“Our first target is the MBOSE building; next will be St. Anthony’s School and College where I passed out from. And even NEHU where I received my diploma. And yes, we will keep planting bombs till you and your government comes up with a solution to employ every single Meghalayan out there,” the email said.
Hek’s response
In response to the statement of the group, the BJP leader AL Hek said,” One wrong cannot correct another wrong. I urge them to come to the right path and the government will listen to the grievances of the unemployed youths”.
