Death toll rises to 6 due to rain-induced calamity

Shillong, May 31: The death toll in the rain-induced natural calamity rose to 6 in Meghalaya. The number of injured stands at 4.

After the reported death of two persons- Klosliya Kharkongor(50) from Lumkyntung Village, under Laitkroh-Khatarshnong Block and Samborlang Tariang (35) from Mawbynna, Pomlakrai, four more deaths were reported on Saturday. One person was injured.

A statement issued by Commissioner and Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management, Sanjay Goyal said that 14- year -old Mebanskhem Mukhim from Kharang village in East Khasi Hills died after a tree was uprooted due to strong wind. Two minors – Batgrikchi A Sangma (7) and Brime D Sangma (13) from Kentapara village in West Garo Hills succumbed to to juries after lightning.

Nikolas Kharpran (36) from Kyrdeng village in Ri Bhoi drowned at Umlew River under Mawkduk village.

Many damages were caused by squally wind with extremely heavy rainfall.
During the past three days from May 29 to May 31, a total of 1094 population in 49 villages under 23 blocks were affected while 28 houses and 33 infrastructure were damaged.
