District administration to deploy police force at Lum Survey

Shillong July 31: East Khasi Hills district administration wanted police deployment at Lum Survey to prevent law and order situation ahead of the hearing of the case by the court on August 19.

A meeting chaired by the deputy commissioner RM Kurbah with the SP, CEO of Shillong Cantonment Board and president and secretary of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) decided this.

“To ensure there is no law and order situation, we have directed the SP to deploy police in the area till the court passes its order since a hearing will be held on August 19 and we have decided to wait for the court order and we will abide by its direction,” the DC said.

To a question on the report of the inspection conducted on May 8, the DC said that the Defence Estate Officer had informed that apart from the three who had filed a petition before the court there are others, who are residing at Lum Survey illegally.

“However, since the court had issued a stay order, we have to wait for its order after the hearing to be held on August 19. Based on this, a decision will be taken by the DEO,” she said.

She said the land does not belong to the government of Meghalaya but to the Defence authority.

She said there are over 80-90 households at Lum Survey as per the survey conducted by the DEO. “These people have been residing there without permission. They are illegal and unauthorized settlers,” she said.

The HYC president Roykupar Synrem said the council would be compelled to take action if the illegal settlers are not evicted from Lum Survey after August 19.

“The recently conducted joint inspection has revealed that the majority of the people residing in the land are illegal settlers. We will wait for the order to be passed by the court after August 19. However, if no action is being taken against the illegal settlers, we will be left with no option but to take stern action,” Synrem said.
