FCI initiates consumer-friendly measures

Shillong, July 20: The Food Corporation of India ( FCI), North East region has informed Open Market Sales Scheme Domestic (OMSSD) wherein rice and wheat are auctioned in the open market on a weekly basis to keep the prices of both the commodities under control so that the consumers are benefited.
The FCI regional office in Shillong covers Meghalaya Mizoram and Tripura.
Addressing a press conference, the FCI general manager SK Yadav said that the major initiative of FCI in Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura is augmentation of storage capacity to ensure food security in the region. The storage capacity under the region increased more than 40 % in last 3 years-from 87070 MT to 122636 MT. Around 88000 MT storage capacity is in different phases of creation in Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura by the FCI under various schemes.
The FCI was also instrumental in releasing around 7.5 lakh metric tons food grains free of cost under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY ) Scheme from April 2020 to December 2022.
Yadav said the FCI also issued 100 % fortified rice under NFSA, other welfare schemes and OMSSD to ensure food and nutritional security.
No plastic rice
The official ruled out circulation of plastic rice in the market.
“Who will have the time to manufacture plastic rice”, Yadav said.
He said the FCI ensures release of quality food grains.
Rice scam probe
Yadav said he heard about the rice lifted by the state government landing up in a private godown in Assam.
“We have no role in it as the state government had lifted the rice . Moreover , investigation is on into the matter and it is pending in the court”, he said.
