Female athlete seeks help for training to take part in international event

Shillong, Aug 1: A female athlete has sought the intervention of the state government to provide help for her training in pankration (wrestling) to be held from August 6 to September 3 in Thailand and also for the subsequent international event.

Lorenza Songthiang from Laitkor was qualified for the ‘World Combat Games’ to be held at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in October this year.

The training in Phuket, Thailand is in preparation for participating in the world combat games.

Earlier this year, she had won a bronze medal in the Pankration World Championship held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from May 2 to 4.

The chief minister had congratulated the athlete then.

Lorenza, who was seen with her family members at the secretariat seeking help, said that she needs financial assistance so that the training can be completed.

The All India Traditional Wrestling and Pankration Federation ( AITWPF) had written to her that she was qualified for ‘under 57 kg women Pankration Elite.

According to the federation, the expenditure for the training and participation in the world combat games will be Rs 2, 25,000.

In a separate letter, Omarmukhtar Tamboli, the president of AITWPF, had congratulated Lorenza for the selection.

“I am to hereby congratulate and confirm you that you have been qualified in Pankration Elite, based on the performance giving during the UWW World Pankration Championship 2023, 2-4 May, Tashkent, Uzbekistan for the upcoming International Olympic Committee patronage “World Combat Games 2023, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia”, powered by GAISF, to be held between 21st to 30th October”, the letter said.
