HYC & NEHUSU meet Education Minister, seeks state university in city

Pressure group wants NEHU to put on hold NEP implementation

Shillong, Aug 1:A delegation of HYC and NEHUSU met Education Minister Rakkam Sangma and demanded a state university in Shillong.

The demand assumes significance in the context of the move of NEHU to implement National Education Policy 2020.

Breifing reporters on Tuesday after meeting both the NEHU Vice Chancellor and the Education Minister, the HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin said though a state university was established after converting Williamson Sangma Technical University in  Tura , Shillong should also have a state university.

NEP issue 

Kharjahrin said the HYC had asked the NEHU Vice Chancellor to discuss the National Education Policy implementation in the academic council before going ahead with the plan.

According to Kharjahrin, the VC said he will discuss the matter with his colleagues.

The NGO also suggested that there should be a meeting of principals and associations of teachers.

The HYC warned that if NEHU decides to go ahead with NEP, it will not be silent.

Discussion on Aug 10 

Later, Rakkam said the issue of NEP will be discussed in the meeting of the Meghalaya Higher Education Council on August 10.

The state government has also asked NEHU  to convene a meeting with the heads of all institutions on the NEP implementation.

D. El.ED result delay 

Rakkam also assured to take up with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) regarding the delay in declaring the results of the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.EL.ED) for the past 5 years.

“We will take up with the NIOS authority and find out what happened to the result of the D.EL.ED),” he  told reporters after a meeting with the delegation of 29 students from Sibsingh Centre in West Khasi Hills.

The minister said it is unfortunate and he is suspecting that there are many centres across the state which are facing the same situation.
