First trailer of Minamata starring Johnny Depp released

Mumbai, Dec 11 (UNI): The much-awaited full length trailer of Minamata, a movie based on the final days and work of famed war photographer W Eugene Smith, played by Johnny Depp, was released on Saturday.

Set in 1971, following his celebrated days as one of the most revered photojournalists of World War II, W Eugene Smith (Johnny Depp) has become a recluse, disconnected from society and his career.

But a secret commission from Life magazine editor Robert Hayes (Bill Nighy) sends him to the Japanese coastal city of Minamata, which has been ravaged by mercury poisoning; the result of decades of gross industrial negligence by the Chisso Corporation.

The images from the toxic village give the disaster a heart-breaking human dimension, as Smith’s initial assignment turns into a life-changing experience for him.

Produced by movie giant Goldwyn Films, Minamata stars Johnny Depp, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Katherine Jenkins, Jun Kunimura, Lily Robinson, Ryo Kase, Akiko Iwase, Minami, and Bill Nighy.

The flick is directed by Andrew Levitas. The screenplay is written by David Kessler, Andrew Levitas, Jason Forman, and Stephen Deuters. The movie is slated for release on December 15.
