Four companies of Central forces deployed for law and order

Shillong, Nov 25: Four companies of Central forces were deployed in Shillong, Jowai and Nongpoh to ensure law and order in the state following the incident of Mukroh where five Jaintia villagers and one Assam forest guard were killed in firing by Assam police personnel.

DGP LR Bishnoi informed this on Friday.

While two companies are from the CRPF, two  are from the BSF.

Masked men create panic in Khyndailad 

On Friday morning, around 20 masked men arrived in Khyndailad and wanted the banks and shops to close.

Police said this created panic resulting in the closure of shops at the commercial hub and other parts of the city.

Though the police assured security, the shops remained closed throughout the day.

Non-cooperation affects office functioning 

The functioning of the main secretariat and other offices was affected due to the non-cooperation day announced by the pressure groups.

Many markets were also closed and the city roads witnessed thin traffic flow. .

Oil tankers 

Earlier, the DGP said oil tankers were  escorted from Assam to Meghalaya to tide over the shortage of fuel.

As far as the movement of people from Assam is  concerned,  the DGP said the flow has increased and people are visiting tourist spots like Sohra.

A delegation led by the DGP had visited Mukroh to assess the situation.

Referring to Shillong violence, he said three lady constables sustained only minor injuries during the attack by the miscreants inside the Shillong Civil Hospital.

Red Flag Day today 

As the district administration denied permission to Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) to march towards Assam House from Fire Brigade ground, the gathering will be held at U Soso Tham Auditorium premises on Saturday at 3 pm.

In a statement issued on Friday, HITO president Donbok Dkhar said the purpose of the rally is to mourn the loss of five fellow citizens in a firing by Assam police at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills on November 22.

Dkhar also appealed to all concerned to join hands in the rally.

“We also appeal to all businesses to remain open as usual as our battle is not against any individual or community, but solely against the respective state governments which have failed to abide by the Constitution on guaranteeing the freedom of lives and livelihood of all citizens,” he said.
