Six killed in firing incident on Meghalaya-Assam border

Rymbui leaves for Mukroh; festivals cancelled

Shillong, Nov 22: Five Jaintia civilians from West Jaintia Hills and an Assam forest guard were killed in a firing incident on Tuesday.

Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi confirmed the incident and said it is in Mukroh area of the border.

While Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has already left for the incident site, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is holding talks with church leaders in the city.

The government has cancelled all the ongoing festivals, like the literature fest and Cherry Blossoms Festival, in the city in view of the firing incident.

Among the 6 persons died due to firing by Assam Police and Assam Forest Guards, the Meghalaya civilians have been identified as Thal Shadap, Nikhasi Dhar, Sik Talang, Tal Nartiang and Chirup Sumer.

The state government has already condemned the incident where the ‘Assam police and Assam forest guards entered Meghalaya and resorted to unprovoked firing’.

“I  appeal to our citizens to maintain peace and harmony in the state. The state government is taking all the necessary steps to ensure that law and order is maintained”, Conrad said.
