Fresh violence in Manipur’s Jiribum after peace agreement
Shillong, Aug 3: Fresh violence broke out in Manipur’s Jiribum bordering Assam on Saturday, two days after the Meitei and Hmar communities agreed to take steps to restore peace in the district.
Armed men torched a house at Lalpani and fired several rounds of gunshots on Friday night, agency reports said. Security forces were rushed to the area following the violence.
The two communities agreed in a Thursday meeting held at a CRPF facility in the bordering Cachar district. The district collector, SP, the Jiribam Deputy Inspector General of the CRPF and the commandants of the 39 Assam Rifles were present, reports said.
A source told the media that the violence was against the peace agreement as a section of people did not want it.
Besides Hmar, leaders from the Thadou, Paitei and Mizo tribes that come under the Zo umbrella attended the meeting. On Friday, the apex tribal body of the Hmars dissolved the Jiribam unit for participating in the peace meeting, reported The Hindu.
