Gotabaya may return to Sri Lanka

Colombo, July 26 (UNI): Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who had fled the island nation following the unrest, may return to his country, Cabinet spokesman said on Tuesday.

Rajapaksa fled Sri Lanka, along with wife, on July 13, following the unrest after the anti-government mass-protests, demanding the resignations of top leaders of the nation, had erupted wherein the protesters also seized some high-profile government buildings, including Presidential Secretariat, President’s house and Temple Trees.

Cabinet spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said that Gotabaya was not hiding in Singapore and was expected to return to Sri Lanka.

Singapore, where the former President has been been reported to be, has granted a 14-day short-term visit pass to Gotabaya as he entered the country on a private visit on July 14, citing immigration authorities in Singapore, Daily Mirror reported.

The comments made by the minister came when inquired about a complaint filed with the Attorney General of Singapore for the arrest of Gotabaya Rajapaksa and reports of his return to Sri Lanka in August, NewsWire reported.

Stating that he had been informed that the former President will return to the country, the minister said if there are changes then the former President will be informed by the relevant authorities.

The report said that the minister has also said that on a political front, the government has not been informed of the travel plans regarding Gotabaya or any specific dates for his return.
