Govt engages experts to study safety of Umiam dam

Shillong, Oct 10: The state government has entrusted two agencies to assess the safety aspect of Umiam dam.

The study assumes significance after the collapse of a dam in Sikkim that caused devastation there.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the CMD MeECL, Sanjay Goyal said the Central Soil and Materials Research Station (CSMRS) is conducting a study for structural safety of the dams under Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Programme (DRIP)

Another study is being done by Central Water Power Research Station for instrumentations and earthquake parameters .

These studies are in addition to the evaluation of IIT Guwahati on both sub structure and bridge.

According to Goyal as per the study conducted by IIT Guwahati in 2019, the dam is safe but the government still wants to ensure the safety of the dam by engaging in more experts.
