Locals, NGOs remove plantations, temporary structures in Lapangap

Shillong, June 24: Chef Secretary DP Wahlang and Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang jointly met Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong to discuss Lapangap border issue.
Locals uprooted plantations and destroyed temporary structures set up by Assam in Lapangap, West Jaintia Hills border, on Wednesday morning.
Both the DGP and the CS did not want to talk to journalists about the incident.
MDA spokesperson and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh said the government is committed to address the issue.
According to the police, after temporary structures and tree plantations had come up on the inter-state border, a crowd from Lapangap and adjoining villages, accompanied by some NGOs, removed them.
West Jaintia Hills SP Chemphang Syrti said efforts were made by officials of both the district administration to control and disperse the crowd.
The police also received information that the Karbi community may target the paddy fields of the Pnar residents in the Tahpad and Lapangap area.
“Steps will be taken with the West Karbi Anglong district administration to keep the situation under control and avoid further escalation”, he said, adding that additional force will be deployed to monitor the situation.
