Govt makes effort to transport 40 medical students stranded in Bangladesh

Shillong, July 19: Forty Meghalaya students from Eastern Medical College, Bangladesh are stranded due to violence in the neighbouring country.

Out of 40, thirty are female students and the remaining are males. They are expected to come to India through Tripura border.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the government is in touch with the Indian Embassy and Tripura authorities to ensure the safe return of the medical students from the Tripura border.

He said earlier 405 students, including 80 from Meghalaya, have been evacuated  through Dawki.

The chief minister said, “About 405 students from India have been evacuated from Bangladesh through Dawki and out of them about 80, are from our state of Meghalaya itself and the rest are from different parts of the country. We also have students from Bhutan and Nepal and some tourists, who are stuck and who have crossed the border from Dawki side.”

Online portal 

The chief minister said the government will  come up with an online portal to get contact details of all students from Meghalaya, who are studying outside the state and the  country.

He said the government has faced a lot of problems in the past as it did not have direct contact with the students studying abroad.
