Govt to restart issuing challans for lime stone export

Shillong, Aug 18: The state government has decided to restart issuing challans for export of limestone outside Meghalaya.

The decision is after the government received clarification from the Coal and Mines Ministry and Ministry of Commerce  following an order passed by the Meghalaya High Court on June 23 this year.

Speaking to reporters , Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said after the High Court order, the state government took up the issue with the union ministry of Coal and Mines as well as with the Ministry of Commerce.

“So today, through the advocate general, we received the verbal observation of the high court that from now on we are going to issue challan again for export of limestone irrespective of major or minor and the state government will accordingly issue the challan to the concerned exporters for exporting of this material outside the state and outside the country. Again, the high court has listed the case in the next 15 days,” he said.

The government had stopped issuing challans for export of limestone since June 23, 2020.

Ban on fertilisers lifted

The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government  announced its decision to lift the ban on the use of fertilisers and to extend 50% subsidy to farmers for procurement of such fertilisers.

After meeting the delegation of the farmers’ association on Thursday, Tynsong said that the government has decided to lift the ban imposed by the government under the leadership of Mukul Sangma way back in 2014 on the supply of fertilisers to the state.

He said on August 9, the agriculture department had already issued a notification that supplying fertilisers in Meghalaya is now allowed and the concerned stakeholders, the farmers, can now procure these fertilisers.”

Fertiliser is a controlled item as it is being regulated by the union ministry of fertilizer, government of India.

Meeting with Bangladesh  official

Tynsong met the retired Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh.

He said the retired Foreign Secretary made a courtesy call on him in the absence of the Chief Minister.

Tynsong said they discussed a few issues relating to setting up of border haats, creation of more land custom stations in Meghalaya.

“I requested him to kindly take up these issues from his country if they agree so that we can have more land custom stations and more border haats all along Indo-Bangla borders,” he added.
