Govt to review list of medical seats

Shillong,Aug 24: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Thursday that the state government will review the list of medical seats if the allegations of denying seats to the local students are found to be true.

KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah had  alleged that 11 out of 14 medical seats from the state were allotted to students from outside Meghalaya in the open category.

Only three indigenous students were found in the list.

Speaking to reporters, Ampareen said that the matter was discussed with the chief minister and the chief secretary.

“We are looking into the matter,we were also told that the same 11 students had also applied in Manipur but disqualified”, Ampareen said.

The KSU wanted the details of the 11 students especially their Aadhaar cards and EPICs to know whether they belong to Meghalaya or not and also the colleges from where they had graduated.

In his statement, Thabah said, “Out of 14 students selected for screening, only three are local indigenous from Meghalaya while the remaining 11 belong to other non-local indigenous communities.”

The statement was after he Union had also received complaints alleging that the 11 students are not residents of Meghalaya but are hailing from the neighbouring Assam. It was also alleged that they have managed to get documents from Ampati, South West Garo Hills.

Thabah pointed out that the open category is meant for all residents of Meghalaya including Scheduled Tribes and most of the time, majority are Khasis who usually get selected under the category.

“However, the selection of students, who are alleged to be from outside Meghalaya, will no doubt deprived the opportunity to 11 Khasi and Garo students, who are aspiring to pursue MBBS studies,” he said.
