Group demands action against police on Cherishstarfield issue
Shillong, Sept 13: The Sur Ki Nong Mawlai (Voice of Mawlai People) has sought suspension of police officers involved in the killing of former HNLC leader Cherishtarfield Thangkhiew.
According to the group, as per the report of the T. Vaiphei inquiry commission, the police used force and they were at fault while raiding the house of Thangkhiew on August 13 last year.
The group comprising Khasi Students’ Union, Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) have demanded punishment against those responsible.
Khraw Kupar Nongsiej president of the FKJGP Mawlai unit said that before the police raided the house of Thangkhiew they were briefed that he should be arrested.
“What the police did was unprofessional because they did not carry the equipment that were required when raids were conducted at night, even intelligence failed,” Nongsiej said.
