Shillong, March 19: Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan will deliver his maiden address in Hindi on the first day of the Budget session of the Assembly on Monday.
An official with the Raj Bhavan said that though the governor will address the House in Hindi, the speech copies will be circulated in English.
Earlier for the first time, when Ganga Prasad as governor addressed the House in Hindi in March, 2018 , the opposition Congress had criticised him.
One of the former Congress MLAs, who walked out of the House over the issue, is a minister in the present cabinet.
English is the official language of the Assembly.
The government had in the past justified the use of Hindi by the governor by saying that it is allowed once the translated copies are made available.
There has been a demand to use Khasi and Garo languages in the Assembly but it is yet to materialise as translations of the two local languages when spoken will have to be made available.
