Human rights panel seeks report on displacement of Lum Survey settlers

Shillong, May 25: Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has asked the Chief Secretary to submit a report into the eviction drive against settlers at Lum Survey.
In a statement on Saturday, MHRC Secretary said the commission has taken a suo motu cognisance regarding the residents seeking help after vandalism at Lum Survey.

The commission wanted the  chief secretary to submit the detailed report on or before May 30.
Police had already registered a case on May 23 against the top leaders of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC)  hours after they carried out the eviction drive.

“The case was registered at the Sadar police station against HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem, Vice President Donbok Kharlyngdoh, Assistant General Secretary Isaac Basaiawmoit and multiple unknown others in connection with the unlawful actions carried out by them in Lum Survey in the morning of 23/05/24,” according to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Rituraj Ravi.
