HYC detects migrant workers

Shillong, Feb 7: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has detected 15 ‘illegal’ migrant workers in the city.

General Secretary of the HY Mawlai Circle Bashan Lyngdoh Mawnai Iawphniaw said that the labourers who are from West Bengal and Assam came by a night super bus at Rymbai Filling Station.

They were apprehended when they were about to board three taxis arranged for dropping them to Mawdiangdiang.

“The labourers were found entering the state illegally without any valid documents which include work permit, Covid report and police verification,” he said.

Iawphniaw also alleged that the labourers had claimed to have paid Rs 500 each at the Corona Screening Centre at Umling to avoid Covid testing.

“This shows that the Covid check gate at Umling has become a place of illegal collection and not for screening and testing people before they enter the state. The labourers further claimed that they were allowed to enter without any checking by the Infiltration checkgate at Byrni as well,” he said.

The workers were pushed back to their place of origin.
