JNC finds ‘illegal workers’ at East Jaintia Hills cement factory

Shillong, Apr 2: The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) said on Wednesday that several workers at a cement factory in East Jaintia Hills were working without proper licences.
During a “surprise check” at the factory, members of the JNC employment commission found that the workers did not have the licences to work in the state.
In a video shared by JNC, the members were seen asking the workers for licences and whether they were from Bangladesh. “I am a Bengali but from Silchar. My documents are in the room,” said a worker.
The JNC members asked them to stop work immediately and warned the factory management against bringing labourers from outside “as long as our people can do the work”.
In a statement, the JNC general secretary Wanshwa Suting said such surprise checks would continue in the region.
As per JNC’s Save Jaiñtia Mission, which started last December, the state government should have a policy that will allow the employment of only local people in these factories.
